Background of the study
Rural-urban migration is a pervasive phenomenon that significantly influences resource use and environmental sustainability. In Ado-Ekiti Local Government Area, Ekiti State, the influx of migrants from rural areas into urban centers has accelerated natural resource depletion. Migrants often seek improved economic opportunities; however, the resulting rapid urban expansion strains local resources, including land, water, and energy supplies (Olumide, 2023). This study investigates the link between rural-urban migration and the accelerated depletion of natural resources. Factors such as increased demand for housing, infrastructure development, and the consequent deforestation and land-use change are central to this inquiry (Babatunde, 2024). Additionally, the study examines how socio-economic pressures and inadequate urban planning exacerbate resource extraction and environmental degradation. By integrating demographic data with environmental impact assessments, the research aims to elucidate the complex relationship between migration patterns and natural resource sustainability. The findings will inform policy recommendations geared toward managing urban growth and protecting scarce natural resources, contributing to a more sustainable development model (Adewale, 2023).
Statement of the problem
The surge in rural-urban migration in Ado-Ekiti has intensified natural resource depletion, leading to deforestation, water scarcity, and increased pressure on land. Rapid urbanization, coupled with insufficient resource management, poses significant challenges to environmental sustainability. Local authorities struggle to balance population growth with the sustainable use of natural resources, resulting in environmental degradation and reduced quality of life. The absence of effective planning and conservation measures necessitates a comprehensive study to understand and mitigate these adverse impacts (Olumide, 2023; Babatunde, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
• To investigate the relationship between rural-urban migration and natural resource depletion in Ado-Ekiti.
• To assess the environmental impacts associated with urban expansion.
• To propose sustainable urban planning and resource management strategies.
Research questions:
• How does rural-urban migration contribute to natural resource depletion in Ado-Ekiti?
• What environmental impacts result from rapid urban expansion?
• Which planning strategies can mitigate resource depletion?
Research Hypotheses:
• H1: Rural-urban migration is significantly correlated with accelerated natural resource depletion.
• H2: Urban expansion directly contributes to deforestation and water scarcity.
• H3: Sustainable urban planning can effectively reduce the rate of resource depletion.
Significance of the study
This study is significant in linking migration dynamics with natural resource depletion, offering actionable insights for policymakers and urban planners. The findings will help design strategies that manage urban growth sustainably while preserving critical natural resources, thereby promoting long-term environmental stability (Adewale, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to analyzing the impact of rural-urban migration on natural resource depletion in Ado-Ekiti Local Government Area, Ekiti State.
Definitions of terms:
• Rural-Urban Migration: The movement of people from rural to urban areas in search of better opportunities.
• Natural Resource Depletion: The reduction in the availability of resources such as forests, water, and arable land.
• Urban Expansion: The growth of urban areas through the development of land previously used for other purposes
